Παρουσίαση:
THE NEAR EAST RELIEF ORPHANAGE OF SYROS
The Near East Relief Orphanage of Syros was one of the most important institutions created in Greece. It was built in Hermoupolis, Syros to accommodate the large number of orphaned refugees that Near East Relief had gathered in Greece after the Asia Minor Catastrophe, in response to the problem of housing and the lack of infrastructure of charitable institutions. The difficulties of dealing with the need for housing are described by the director of the orphanage in Syros, George White, in a relevant report
(Note from the Director G. White, in O’Connor’s “ISLES OF THE AEGEAN”):
“The question of housing was difficult, for every corner of Greece was filled with the hundreds of thousands of refugees: who had poured in from every port of Turkey… The Greek Government was doing its best to meet the situation, and everything possible was done to help the Near East Relief. It was arranged that the children should be housed in summer resort hotels during the winter… Empty buildings were hard to find as every nook and cranny had been pre-empted by the refugees… It was finally decided that the only course was to build; and the island of Syra where we are now located, was selected as being the most suitable”.
