The Municipality of Syros-Hermoupolis and the Chamber of Cyclades are co-organizing in Syros, from 31st August to 4th September 2016, the 1st Rembetiko Festival “Markos Vamvakaris’s Syra” in honour of Markos Vamvakaris, the great indigenous creator and cornerstone of popular music in Greece.
We aspire that the 1st Rembetiko Festival will be the basis for future actions and initiatives throughout the year, in an effort both to contribute to the culture of our musical education, by initiating the youth into it, who are the best sowing, and promote our tourist island in Greece and abroad.
The Rembetiko Festival program includes a wide variety of events, such as concerts, documentaries, lectures, exhibitions, book presentations and events for children, in order to promote and enhance rembetiko and Markos Vamvakaris’s contribution, through the participation of children and adults.
It is worth mentioning that, in the context of the Festival “Markos Vamvakaris’s Syra”, the concert “Rembetiko Unplugged” by George Dalaras will be held, which is dedicated to Rembetiko with particular reference to Markos Vamvakaris.
George Dalaras, who is a great connoisseur of the tradition of this kind of song, gives rembetiko a new impetus, making the temporal elements of this song known to the European people.
You are all invited to follow the musical paths of rembetiko and Markos Vamvakaris and introduce yourselves to the world of another era. Your support and acceptance of the 1st Rembetiko Festival is our driving force to offer even more in the future.

The Municipality of Syros-Hermoupolis and the Chamber of Cyclades are co-organizing in Syros, Rembetiko Festival “Markos Vamvakaris’s Syra” in honour of Markos Vamvakaris, the great indigenous creator and cornerstone of popular music in Greece.The relationship of Syros with urban popular music, which exists as an integral feature of the cultural element of the first decades of the 20th century in the musical events on our island, as well as the respect and recognition to the work of the great Markos Vamvakaris, who has made rembetiko music and our island well-known worldwide, constitute the threshold for the creation of the Festival “Markos Vamvakaris’s Syra”, which, among other things, aims at the formal recognition of the artistic value of rembetiko.
